Description
Centre Peg – Gravel Board Support for Timber Fencing
Overview
A standard horizontal gravel board spans up to 3 meters between fence posts. While it safely keeps your vertical panels clear of damp soil, the sheer weight of the overlapping featheredge boards combined with seasonal ground movement puts massive downward stress right at the center of that span. Without support, a timber gravel board will slowly sag and dip, leaving a gaping hole for pests to squeeze under and causing your vertical boards to pull out of alignment. Our structural Fencing Centre Peg completely solves this structural weakness.
By driving this thick-gauge, slow-grown softwood stake directly into the subsoil behind the board, you create an unyielding mid-bay pillar. The peg pins the center of the gravel board firmly in place, distributing weight straight into the ground and stabilizing your entire lower framing system.
Key Features
-
Resists Heavy Soil Pressures: Acts as a mini retaining anchor, preventing your gravel board from bowing outward if your lawn sits slightly higher on one side.
-
Heavy-Duty Square Cut: The thick, solid cross-section handles high-impact mallet force without splitting or shattering during installation.
-
Anti-Bleed Corrosion Shield: Advanced premium chemical washes ensure the defensive copper triazole salts bond deeply within the heartwood matrix, eliminating orange staining.
-
Contractor-Preferred Sizing: Tucks neatly out of sight behind the lower framing rail, maintaining clean, unblemished sightlines across your primary fence panels.

Trade Installation & Alignment Tip
Pro Tip: To achieve a rock-solid finish, fix your main fence posts and level out your 3.0m horizontal gravel board first. Walk to the back (inside) face of the fence bay and mark the exact midpoint (1.5m).
The Professional Method: Place the flat face of the centre peg against the inside of the gravel board. Using a heavy club hammer or maul, drive the pointed peg down into the earth until the flat top sits flush with (or slightly below) the top edge of your gravel board. Secure the peg tightly to the board using two heavy-duty, exterior-grade 75mm wood screws or hot-dipped galvanised twist nails. If your soil is exceptionally soft or waterlogged, you can drop a small splash of rapid-setting Postcrete around the base of the peg for an absolute ironclad anchor!
