A standard horizontal gravel board spans up to 3 meters between fence posts. Without support, a timber gravel board will slowly sag and dip, leaving a gaping hole for pests to squeeze under and causing your vertical boards to pull out of alignment. Pro Tip: To achieve a rock-solid finish, fix your main fence posts and level out your 3.0m horizontal gravel board first. Walk to the back (inside) face of the fence bay and mark the exact midpoint (1.5m).
The Professional Method: Place the flat face of the centre peg against the inside of the gravel board. Using a heavy club hammer or maul, drive the pointed peg down into the earth until the flat top sits flush with (or slightly below) the top edge of your gravel board. Secure the peg tightly to the board using two heavy-duty, exterior-grade 75mm wood screws or hot-dipped galvanised twist nails. If your soil is exceptionally soft or waterlogged, you can drop a small splash of rapid-setting Postcrete around the base of the peg for an absolute ironclad anchor!
