Description
Fencing Capping – Timber Fence Top Cover for Panels
Overview
The top end-grain of a vertical fence slat acts exactly like a bundle of tiny straws, eagerly wicking pooling rainwater straight down into the heart of the wood. Without a reliable shield, this constant moisture saturation leads to fast rotting, splitting, and panel warp within just a few seasons. Our structural Timber Fencing Capping Rail provides the definitive defense.
As shown in the product image, the rail features clean, dual-angled edges (often called a two-way weathered or chamfered profile). This specific geometry ensures that even during torrential downpours, water is deflected cleanly clear of the underlying fence face. Milled from slow-grown, high-density softwood, these horizontal caps add considerable structural rigidness to the upper framing, tying the posts and panels into a single, cohesive unit that resists heavy wind rattle.
Key Features
-
Deflects Downward Rot: Stops water from seeping directly into the exposed top-cuts of vertical featheredge fencing or pre-assembled panels.
-
Smooth-Planed Trade Profile: Features a beautifully finished, splinter-free surface that looks excellent on both modern residential and traditional cottage boundaries.
-
Anti-Bleed Preservative Wash: Advanced high-pressure chemical treatments ensure the defensive copper triazole salts bond deeply within the heartwood matrix, eliminating orange streaks.
-
On-Site Flexibility: Available in standard trade length (3.0m) that trim down smoothly to perfectly accommodate custom fence bay widths, side gates, or corners.

Trade Installation & Assembly Tip
Pro Tip: Never nail a capping rail directly onto the top of your vertical fence boards without internal support—doing so leaves air gaps that trap water and causes nails to pop out as the wood expands.
The Professional Method: Always run a flat Fencing Counter Rail horizontally right along the top back-edge of your featheredge boards first. Once your boards are sandwiched tightly against the counter rail, place this chamfered capping rail over the flat top. Drive high-torque, exterior-grade screws or hot-dipped galvanised nails vertically straight down through the thick center apex of the capping rail, passing through the board tips, and sinking deep into the counter rail below. This interlocking design will never twist or blow off in a storm!
