Pro Tip: Concrete slabs, patios, and stone blocks are rarely perfectly flat. If you bolt a U-post bracket flat against an uneven surface, the entire timber post will lean noticeably out of plumb, throwing off your entire fence or pergola line.

The Trade Method: Never rely on the ground being perfectly level. Drill your masonry holes, drop your heavy-duty anchor bolts (like mechanical Excalibur screw bolts or rawlbolts) through the bracket base, but do not tighten them down completely. Slip a high-quality spirit level inside the vertical U-shoe. If it leans, slide stainless steel horseshoe shims or washers underneath the base plate right next to the anchor bolts to level the shoe perfectly.
